There are many factors to consider when choosing the right college volleyball program for your post-secondary experience. The school itself, as well as the academics should also be high on the list. However, when it comes to the volleyball program, it’s not a one-size fits all situation. Many volleyball players have a grand dream of playing at a top NCAA Division 1 school, yet aren’t the right fit for the team culture, as they don’t want to wake up at 5am each morning to put in the time and effort required to succeed at that level.

When choosing the right volleyball program consider these 3 questions:

1. What kind of coach do I perform best with?

Understanding the coaching style that suits you best is crucial. Some players thrive under a demanding, high-intensity coach who pushes them to their limits, while others excel with a supportive, encouraging mentor. Reflect on your past experiences with coaches and identify the traits that helped you succeed. Do you need a coach who provides detailed feedback and structured practices, or one who fosters independence and creativity on the court?

You can do some research on this, however on paper it might look differently than in person. Having recruiting support to help you navigate the right coaches for you is an invaluable asset to your final decision.

2. Do I want to play or am I happy sitting on the bench of a large roster?

At Six Pack, we have volleyball athletes who just want to be a part of an amazing team, no matter how large the roster and how low their chances of playing are. We also have athletes who prefer smaller programs because they can play right away. We also have incredible exceptional athletes who will play on those large rosters that are hard to crack.

Consider your skills and whether you want to be a key volleyball player. Even if it’s a smaller school or lower division. Conversely, if you’re comfortable developing your skills and being part of a larger team dynamic, even if it means more time on the bench, a bigger program might suit you. Assess your goals and be honest about what will make you happiest and most fulfilled during your college or university career.

3. What kind of team culture do I want to be a part of?

Team culture can greatly impact your college experience. Some teams are highly competitive with a focus on winning championships, while others emphasize camaraderie, personal development, and a balanced approach to sports and academics. Think about the environment in which you thrive. Do you want a team that’s like a family, with strong bonds and mutual support, or one that pushes you with its competitive edge? Speak to current players and coaches to get a sense of the team’s culture and values.

Choosing the right college volleyball program involves thoughtful consideration of your personal needs and aspirations. By asking yourself these key questions about coaching styles, playing time, and team culture, you can make an informed decision that will lead to a rewarding and enjoyable college volleyball experience. Remember, the best program is one that aligns with your goals and helps you grow both as an athlete and an individual.
