Describe how you work in a team.
Team work is my priority in sports and in my personal life as well. I enjoy encouraging my teammates and seeing their successes as much as my own. I am a positive influence in creating connection, energy and focus within my team. My coaches describe me as the “glue” for the team and I take pride in that a role.
Athletic highlights and how you felt when you received them:
I received the Sandeep Ollek Memorial award for great sportsmanship and dedication to team sports at my high school Athletic Banquet. I felt honored to be recognized by multiple coaches for my resiliency as I pride myself in always doing my best for sport and for my teammates.
What are your interests outside of sports? Why do you like them?
I value relationships as one of my top priorities I make a conscious effort to spend quality time with my family and friends. To express and provide my support and love.
Learning the French language has been important to me because communication is one of my passions and to be able to speak and see the world in the perspective of another language is fascinating to me.
I enjoy exploring and experimenting with new fashion trends with clothing, hair styles and makeups products. I find it as a fun way to try new things and different ways of presenting myself.
Who are your role models and why?
The first role model I’d like to acknowledge is my school volleyball coach, Mike Smith. I hope to one day have his view on volleyball that their is always more to learn and teach about the sport. He has coached for many many years and continues to spread his love and support in the community. He stood out to me as a coach because he has always supported me on and off the court. He saw potential in me early in my Grade 10 year and took me up to play with the seniors. He helped me learn confidence and how to used my greatest skills to my advantage and create a strong volleyball IQ.
My second role model was my team captain, Ashtynn Gurnsey. She inspired me because of her determination for success, she never gave up on a ball as a setter and used her knowledge of the sport to her advantage. She was able to balance a fun, goofy personality but also was a very strong hearted competitive leader. She inspired me to become the best leader I can on every team I get to be apart of.
Involvement in other sports or extracurricular. Why is it important for you?
I’ve played multiple schools sports including volleyball, basketball, ultimate frisbee and soccer. These sports have given me the opportunity to involve myself in the athletic community in which I have found my greatest friendships and support for the future I wish to achieve. In addition this wide variety of sports has created an environment that has allowed me to foster a strong set of athletic and leadership skills.
I have recently taken to coaching volleyball, to support and spread my knowledge. This experience allows me to give pack to the community that created my passion, continuing to help me grow as an athlete, student and leader.
Academic highlights and how you felt when you received them?
My 9th grade year I was awarded the “Fille de perseverance” award at my school academic assembly. This award symbolizes the progress and commitment I have made in my French academics. I felt very honored to be chosen out of my all peers and to be acknowledged for my hard work and perseverance throughout the year. These are the traits that I value as an individual above others. It was very meaningful for me to receive this competitive award.
What program would you like to attend in school?
I’d like my university/college courses to focus on sports. I’m exploring opportunities in Clinical Psychology. Initially I would like take courses that apply to a Neurosciences degree program.
How do you envision your school life in college/university?
I’m looking forward to being immersed in a post secondary school environment. I hope to be an active member of a competitive volleyball team and become involved in an energetic sports community. I am excited to take courses focused on my interests in physical health. I would like to live in a dorm with my teammates and creating a supportive, inclusive, positive and fun environment.
