Understanding and navigating the NCAA rules of recruiting, specifically for volleyball is a challenge for athletes and parents alike. Especially when it comes down to coach conversations. When can coaches reach out? How can coaches reach out? What can we discuss with coaches? These questions loom large in the minds of aspiring NCAA volleyball athletes seeking to make their mark at the next level. While it may surprise you, the rules of recruiting differ per NCAA division. We’ll break it all down by division, specifically for the sport of volleyball.
Ever heard of the importance of June 15th of your Grade 10 year? It marks a significant date, signaling the beginning of direct communication between coaches and prospective student-athletes. It allows for coaches to develop relationships with prospective athletes before inviting them for an official visit to their campus, starting August 1st going into Grade 11.
This doesn’t mean you start your recruiting process on June 15th of Grade 10. Not at all. Coaches are still building their programs before this crucial date based on athlete profiles, ID camps, and communicating with athletes’ coaches and recruiting support.
Let’s dive in deeper, division by division, shall we?
NCAA DIVISION I VOLLEYBALL RECRUITING RULES
Rules BEFORE June 15th of Grade 10
Direct contact: Coaches cannot directly contact prospective volleyball athletes and their parents, or discuss any recruiting matters prior to June 15th of your sophomore year (Grade 10). Recruiting support and club coaches can speak to NCAA coaches on your behalf until then.
Camps & events: Coaches can watch you play, but cannot discuss recruiting at all with athletes or their parents. Recruiting support may come in to have court-side conversations on the athlete’s behalf.
Official visits & unofficial visits: Prospective volleyball athletes may visit the campus unofficially with their family, but cannot plan to meet with the coaching staff. If you run into the coach on campus, you cannot discuss recruiting. At this time, there are no official visits offered by the coach.
Rules ON/AFTER June 15th of Grade 10
Direct contact: Coaches can contact the athlete/parents by phone, text, email and direct message over socials. At this time they can verbally offer a position on their team, including possible athletic scholarship.
Camps & events: Coaches may watch you play and can discuss volleyball recruiting with you (athlete) and your parents.
Official visits & unofficial visits: Between June 15th of your sophomore year and August 1st of your junior (Grade 11) year, you may go on an unofficial visit of the campus. You can arrange to meet with coaching staff on campus. If you run into the coach on campus, you can have a conversation about recruiting. Please note: an official visit is different from unofficial visits and you must be invited by coaching staff. Coaches can invite athletes for an official visit to the campus on or after August 1st of the athlete’s Grade 11 year.
NCAA DIVISION II VOLLEYBALL RECRUITING RULES
Division II volleyball recruiting rules are slightly more laxed.
Direct contact: Just like Division I any direct contact with athletes and their parents are prohibited until June 15th of the athlete’s Grade 10 year. They can connect with club coaches and volleyball recruiting support. This extends to off-campus contact, like camps and tournaments.
Unofficial visits: You may unofficially visit campus at any time.
Official visits: You can go on an official visit starting June 15th of Grade 10, rather than wait until August 1st of Grade 11.
NCAA DIVISION III VOLLEYBALL RECRUITING RULES
Division III is even more laxed about their regulations.
Direct contact: Coaches may discuss recruiting with athletes at any time and there is no limit on when they can directly contact athletes or what can be discussed.
Camps & events: Coaches can connect with you at camps & events on or after June 15th of your sophomore year.
Unofficial visits: Athletes can visit the campus unofficially and speak to coaches at any time. There is no limit to this.
Official visits: Athletes can start going on official visits January 1st of their junior (Grade 11) year.
