If you’re an aspiring student-athlete, one of the biggest questions you’ll ask is when to start volleyball recruiting. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer – at Six Pack Recruiting Sports, we’re firm believers that you should start when you’re ready. With that said, understanding the right timing can significantly impact your opportunities. A strong volleyball recruiting timeline begins earlier than most athletes expect, and knowing the ideal recruiting age in volleyball can help you stay ahead of the competition.

Start in Freshman or Sophomore Year.

For most athletes, the ideal answer to when to start volleyball recruiting is Grade 9 or Grade 10. Your starting point depends on your goals. If you’re aiming for highly competitive NCAA Division 1 programs, starting in Grade 9 gives you a major advantage. For others targeting different NCAA divisions or Canadian schools (USPORTS), Grade 10 can still position you well within the typical volleyball recruiting timeline.

“That early? Why so soon?”

It often surprises athletes and parents to hear how early the process begins. Afterall, you’re just entering high school… you now have to turn focus on college or university? NCAA coaches start identifying talent as early as Grade 9 (freshman year). Even though they may not be able to initiate direct communication until later in sophomore year, they are actively building watch lists. This means your performance, tournament exposure, and engagement matter earlier than you think. Furthermore, the academic piece begins in Grade 9 for student-athletes seeking NCAA opportunities.  Six Pack Recruiting, we make sure all of our athletes are on the right track every step of the way.

Understanding the recruiting age in the volleyball landscape is key. While communication rules may seem to delay conversations, in actuality, there are many discussions happening behind closed doors between Six Pack Recruiting and NCAA coaches. With our proven success, we know that these conversations lead to recruitment and oftentimes full ride scholarships.

If you choose to wait until after June 15th of your sophomore year, not only do you risk missing the window where coaches are forming their initial impressions, but you risk potential opportunities that your recruiter can set up.

Don’t take chances with your recruiting.

What should you do in the early years?

Starting early doesn’t mean rushing into commitments: it means building a strong foundation and extra time in developing relationships with your future coach. While in Grades 9 and 10, athletes should focus on skill development, competition exposure, and creating connections.

One of the most effective steps you can take is working with a trusted recruiter. A knowledgeable recruiter not only understands the volleyball recruiting timeline but also has established relationships with NCAA coaches. As mentioned above, Six Pack Recruiting Sports plays a hands-on role in the process, with a strong emphasis on coach advocacy during this time – we are frequently having coach conversations on your behalf to get you noticed by coaches and considered for the right programs. That way, when the time comes for direct communication, you have a good sense as to who will be calling you.

This guidance can be a game-changer, especially when navigating such a competitive landscape

Athlete success story:

As a high performance athlete with dreams of playing NCAA Division 1, Alex B. knew she had to begin her recruiting process early. She started working with Six Pack Recruiting Sports in her freshman year of high school. She was actively engaged in the process, attended group sessions, reached out to coaches, utilized Six Pack Recruiting’s knowledge as leverage in her journey. Came June 15th of her Grade 10 year: the day where NCAA coaches can reach out to athletes and their parents. Alex took the week off of school in order to have coach calls, as she was expecting many (something Six Pack Recruiting advised her about), and by the end of that week she was delighted to have 7 offers on the table from many of her top programs. She ultimately verbally accepted an offer with NC State, and will be attending in 2027!

“What if I’m a Junior or Senior—Is it too late?

If you’re getting a later start, don’t panic. While it’s ideal to begin earlier, starting in Grade 11 or even Grade 12 doesn’t mean your opportunities are gone. It simply means your approach needs to be more strategic and efficient.

At this stage, your recruiting plan should focus on targeted outreach, strong highlight videos, and maximizing exposure at key events. Having the right recruiter in your corner, will further guide you on opportunities that are still available, last minute roster changes and more.
