If you’re just starting your journey, understanding how volleyball recruiting works can feel overwhelming and there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ recruiting journey. However, this volleyball recruiting guide is designed to simplify the process and help you take your first steps with confidence and clarity.

Get Clear on Your Goals

Before you dive in, it’s really important that you get clear on what you actually want your collegiate experience to look and feel like.

Too many athletes jump straight into emailing coaches or building highlight videos without defining their goals. While we love the determination and motivation to succeed, not having a clear vision can lead to more confusion in the process.

If you don’t know where to start, ask yourself three key questions:

  • Is my primary focus on volleyball or academics?
  • What kind of coach do I want to play for?
  • Do I want to play or am I okay sitting on the bench for a large part of my collegiate career?

Your honest answers will shape every decision you make moving forward – from the schools you target to the conversations you have with coaches.

As we’re approaching the opening date of the NCAA Transfer Portal, these are conversations we’re having with athletes everyday. While some athletes initially wanted to be a part of a large team, training with some of the best NCAA athletes in the country, and were okay sitting on the bench for Years 1 & 2, now have a different perspective of their wants and needs when it comes to their collegiate experience. The Transfer Portal is not an easy alternative. Let’s get clear about these goals early-on, so that you spend your 4 years at a program you love.

Know Your Lane

Secondly, it’s important to “know your lane.”

While we encourage athletes to dream big, successful recruiting is built on a balance of ambition and realism. Social media often highlights top programs, showcasing packed gyms and high-energy moments – but reality is, that’s only a small snapshot of the full experience.

Behind the scenes, it takes relentless work, discipline, and resilience to compete at that level. Ask yourself honestly: are you ready for the commitment it takes to get there?

Understanding where you realistically fit doesn’t limit you – it positions you to find the right program where you can thrive.

Get the Right Recruiting Support

Most importantly, consider investing in the right recruiting support.

I’m talking about a real live human being that understands ever changing recruiting rules, timelines, and has the right coach connections to take your volleyball recruiting to the next level. In fact, it goes beyond the connections and navigating the recruiting process itself; having someone in your corner who also understands you as an athlete, your academic sensitivities, the importance of your goals of playing on the international stage and so much more.

Internet searches, AI bots and free profiles can only take you so far. Communication strategies can be complex, especially when balancing school, sport and overall satisfaction. Working with credible recruiting support – people who understand the system and have real coach connections – can open doors and create opportunities that are difficult to access on your own. The right guidance can accelerate your process and help you avoid common mistakes.

Take the Next Step

The recruiting journey doesn’t have to feel confusing or stressful. With the right mindset, clear goals, and proper support, you can take control of your path. If you’re ready to learn more about how volleyball recruiting works and build a personalized plan, now is the time to take action—your future program is out there waiting.
